So What Went Wrong?
A Suspense Comic from the TIme
As the comic book became more and more popular, publishers began to seek new ways of making their comic books stand out. This quest led to the creation of comic books that strayed from being just collections of short comic strips, and featured full length stories based in different specific genres. These genres included mainly science fiction, such as superheroes and supernatural stories, and suspense, such as horror and crime stories. These stories strayed away from the family-friendly ideas expressed in the daily paper (Superheroes like Superman and Batman have been changed significantly since their inceptions). and the American public began to fear the effects such stories may have on its youth. These fears finally would boil over with the Dr. Fredric Wertham's bestselling book Seduction of the Innocent, which asserted that these stories were corrupting the minds of the innocent and ultimately leading them into lives of juvenile delinquency, and threw American parents to a panic over the true impact a ten cent comic book could have on their little angels.
